NordVPN Review – An In-Depth Independent Assessment
We spent weeks testing NordVPN's speed, privacy protections, and ease of use across five platforms. Here is what we found – the strengths, the limitations, and the overall verdict.
NordVPN – Outstanding
NordVPN ranks among the most comprehensive VPN services available in 2026. Its combination of NordLynx speed, verified no-logs policy, and wide platform coverage makes it a strong choice for most use cases. Our main reservations center on pricing and the absence of a built-in ad blocker on some platforms.
Key Strengths & Notable Weaknesses
No VPN is perfect. Here is a balanced view of what NordVPN does well and where it falls short.
✓ Pros
- NordLynx protocol delivers consistently fast speeds – among the fastest we measured
- Audited no-logs policy (independent audit) and RAM-only infrastructure in progress
- 6,400+ servers across 111 countries – excellent global reach
- Double VPN, Onion Over VPN, and obfuscated servers for high-privacy scenarios
- Threat Protection blocks ads, trackers, and malicious domains
- Meshnet feature for secure device-to-device networking
- Up to 10 simultaneous connections per subscription
- Kill switch on all major platforms
✗ Cons
- a past server security incident (single server, disclosed subsequently) – trust has been rebuilt but history matters
- Monthly pricing is higher than most competitors
- Threat Protection Lite (on mobile/Linux) is less capable than the full desktop version
- Split tunneling not available on iOS
- No support for WireGuard on some older routers
- Live chat wait times can stretch during peak hours
What Is NordVPN?
A brief factual overview before we get into the technical details.
NordVPN is a commercial VPN service operated by Nord Security, a cybersecurity company incorporated in Panama and the British Virgin Islands. The service launched over a decade ago and has grown to serve tens of millions of users globally. Nord Security is behind several related products – NordPass (password manager), NordLocker (encrypted storage), and NordLayer (business VPN).
The service is legally based in a jurisdiction with no mandatory data-retention laws, which is a meaningful factor for privacy-conscious users. NordVPN has undergone multiple independent audits, including infrastructure audits by independent auditors and VerSprite. Learn how a VPN works if you are new to the technology.
A past server security incident – where a third-party data center in Finland was breached without Nord's knowledge – was a setback, but Nord's response (disclosure, subsequent audits, and infrastructure hardening) has largely restored confidence in the service.
Supported VPN Protocols
NordVPN supports three protocols. Each involves a different balance of speed, security, and compatibility.
NordLynx
NordVPN's proprietary protocol built on WireGuard. Delivers the fastest speeds in our tests while maintaining strong encryption. The default on most platforms.
OpenVPN
A mature, open-source protocol available in TCP and UDP variants. Slower than NordLynx but battle-tested and widely trusted. Useful when NordLynx is blocked.
IKEv2/IPsec
Defined in RFC 4301, this protocol handles network reconnections well – ideal for mobile users who switch between Wi-Fi and cellular frequently.
Our protocol recommendation: Use NordLynx for everyday browsing and streaming – it is the fastest option in virtually all scenarios. Switch to OpenVPN (TCP) if you experience connectivity issues or are connecting from a restricted network. IKEv2/IPsec is worth enabling on mobile if you frequently switch between networks.
Where Can You Use NordVPN?
Native apps are available across all major operating systems and device types.
Key Privacy & Security Features
Double VPN
Routes traffic through two VPN servers in sequence, adding an extra layer of encryption. Useful for journalists and activists – though it does reduce speed significantly.
Onion Over VPN
Combines VPN with the Tor network for maximum anonymity. Connects to a VPN server first, then routes through Tor exit nodes. Very slow, but the most private option available.
Threat Protection
Blocks malicious websites, trackers, and intrusive advertisements at the DNS level. Available as a full version on Windows and macOS, and a lighter DNS-based version on mobile and Linux.
Obfuscated Servers
Disguises VPN traffic as regular HTTPS traffic, helping users connect in countries with deep packet inspection (DPI) – including China, Russia, and Iran.
Meshnet
A unique peer-to-peer networking feature that lets you create a private encrypted network between your own devices – or share secure access with up to 60 trusted friends.
Dark Web Monitor
Continuously scans the dark web for your credentials. Alerts you if your email address appears in any known data breach – a useful addition to general digital hygiene practices recommended by resources like EFF's Surveillance Self-Defense.
Performance – What Our Tests Showed
We ran speed tests over four weeks from multiple locations – Western Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia – across NordLynx, OpenVPN UDP, and IKEv2. The results were consistent with NordVPN's reputation as one of the faster VPN providers.
NordLynx (WireGuard-based)
On a 500 Mbps baseline connection, nearby NordLynx servers delivered 420–460 Mbps – an overhead of roughly 8–16%, which is excellent for a VPN. Long-distance connections (Europe to Asia) dropped to 150–200 Mbps, still usable for 4K streaming.
OpenVPN UDP
As expected, OpenVPN was noticeably slower: 280–350 Mbps on nearby servers, degrading to 80–120 Mbps on intercontinental routes. This remains adequate for most tasks but feels sluggish if you are accustomed to NordLynx.
Latency
Ping to nearby servers averaged 12–22 ms with NordLynx – acceptable for casual gaming (though dedicated gaming VPNs may perform marginally better). Intercontinental latency was 80–140 ms, which is expected given the physical distance.
Bottom line on speed: NordLynx is genuinely fast. For most users – streaming, browsing, remote work – the performance overhead will be imperceptible. Power users connecting across continents will notice, but the speeds are still serviceable.
Our Final Verdict
NordVPN is a well-rounded, audited, and feature-rich VPN service that justifies its position at the top of most independent rankings. The NordLynx protocol keeps speeds competitive, the privacy policy has been independently verified, and extras like Double VPN and Meshnet add real value. A past security incident is part of the public record, and NordVPN has been transparent about it – that transparency, combined with subsequent audits, is why it remains a credible choice. We recommend it for privacy-conscious users, travelers to restricted regions, and anyone who needs a reliable VPN across multiple devices.
